From Cley to west beach at Cromer anglers were scattered taking part in the 2nd Sea Angling Festival in Norfolk with an even bigger turnout than last year and with prize money up for grabs of £500 everyone was very keen to get out and bag themselves a good fish or two over the two day event.
With anglers from all over the country traveling to Norfolk Friday and Saturday morning the local tackle shop Rite Gear Ltd at West Runton was the main area to head for to collect some excellent bait and to gain some information on venues and hot spots along the coast the match was being fished and then it was on the road to venues to be set-up and ready to fish by 9am Saturday morning.
Match day 1 and anglers headed out to some of the top venues like West Runton, Sheringham, Old Hythe, Weybourne, Salthouse and Cley and from the 9am start fish were being caught from all locations but for one angler Simon Bone a Norfolk Angling Club member it was a 4lb Bass to take his bait but due to the new EU law preventing Bass to be removed the fish was released to comply with the Bass ban rules. Lots of other fish were being caught with main species being Dabs, Flounders, Whiting and even quite a few Turbot for a few anglers but it was those lucky 3 to find a Dogfish on day 1 that would be leading into day 2 and in top spot with a nice Dogfish of over 2lb was Henry Randall, closely followed by Chris Orders with his Dogfish he managed to find to take 2nd place and closely followed by our furthest angler travelling all the way from Thurso in top of Scotland David Proudfoot taking 3rd place in day 1.
Steph Erison managed to weigh in a nice Dab in the ladies class.
For the juniors it was young England International Adam Malloy who managed to find a superb Flounder and to take day 1 win and biggest flatfish of the day with young Curtis Taylor not carding but super keen to get back out fishing with his dad to find a good fish.
Match day 2 and again the shop at Rite Gear Ltd was the main focus point for many anglers before heading out to grab some more top quality baits and any terminal gear they may have lost the day before and then everyone was away to get their spots in similar locations to day 1 if they had done well or venturing to other venues to try for something bigger.
Again from the 10am start there was plenty of fish from all venues including another good Bass caught by Norfolk Angling Club angler Richard Hipperson which again was released, a lovely 42cm Coalfish for specimen angler Wayne Mathews and a Smoothound pup at 1lb 5oz caught by Norfolk Angling Club angler Richard Chapman but again Henry Randall leading from day 1 secured victory with another good Dogfish to take day 2 win and overall victory with Richard Chapman taking 2nd on day 2 with his Smoothound pup and in 3rd place was Wayne Mathews with his Coalfish found on deep water venue Salthouse.
In the ladies class angler Steph Erison again managed to find another Dab to add to her weight and was 1st in the ladies class winning some cracking prizes and cash.
For the juniors young Curtis Taylor went out to find a good fish and that’s exactly what he did with a fantastic 34cm Flounder with England International Adam Malloy finding another Flounder to add to his weight from day 1 to take the overall juniors 1st place, joining the match on the final day was also junior Daniel Brown who managed to find a Flounder of 35cm to win day 2 biggest flatfish and to take 2nd junior overall closely followed by Curtis Taylor by 1oz to take 3rd junior overall.
All in all what a fantastic event with plenty of fish caught by all anglers with some ok weather other than final part to Saturday but sunshine all day Sunday soon made the smiles return, was great to see anglers from all over the country traveling to support the event.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at Rite Gear Ltd for all their efforts over the 3 days supplying top quality bait, all the organization and for all contributions towards the prizes, to all the companies who kindly came together to support the event with prizes, Asso Sports Fishing, Trabucco UK, Tronix Pro and Fish Dynamix and to all local businesses who kindly supported the event with advertisement.
Also a huge well done and thank you to all Norfolk Angling Club members who supported the event by fishing over the two days and for bringing raffle prizes and help doing the weigh in at the end of both days.
